This is the score of a musical composition. The performer freely interprets these instructions to the audience, who themselves create the composition in their imaginations. The length of time for each stage is to be determined by the intuitions of the performer.
I. Conducted by the performer, the audience will imagine a simple melodic phrase, of a leisurely pace in the medium range, about 6 beats long. The choice of instrument is up to the listener. Repeat mentally 6 times
II. Drop the phrase a full octave and continue to listen to it
III. Over it, introduce the sound of boiling hot water filling up a bathtub
IV. Over these introduce a sustained violin tone in the upper register
V. Now bring in the sound of a handsaw cutting wood. The performer will conduct this until the mood is well established, gradually raising the volume from piano to forte
VI. Keep the sound of the handsaw, cut all the other sounds
VII. Over the saw introduce a voice coming over the public address system saying
AT-TEN-TION! YOU ARE NOT A-LONE!
AT-TEN-TION! YOU ARE NOT A-LONE!
AT-TEN-TION! YOU ARE NOT A-LONE!
(To assist his audience, the performer may imitate the physical act of using a handsaw)
VIII. Bring in some electronic “Space Age” music
IX. CUT! Silence
X. The rich sounds of birds warbling on a spring morning
XI. Contrast, in a ridiculous fashion, with the sounds of an arcade of pin-ball machines
XII. Fade out
XIII. Bring up the sounds one hears in a busy laundromat
XIV. A pair of elementary school violin students have entered the laundromat and are playing “Three Blind Mice” in a round
XV. Raise to volume of the sounds, make the screeches of the violins harsher
XVI. CUT! Silence
XVII. In the total stillness, the throbbing of a solo cello playing an anguished melody in its high register
XVIII. Over the cello bring in, once again, the sound of boiling water filling up a bathtub
XIX. Someone in the bathtub is chanting:
I AM THAT I AM!, I AM THAT I AM!, I AM THAT I AM!...
XX. Two loudspeakers broadcasting the chants:
VOICE I: APPLE STRUDEL, APPLE STRUDEL, APPLE STRUDEL! ....
VOICE II: MY! MY! MY! MY! MY! MY! .........
XXI. Raise the intensity of the combined sounds to forte!
XXII. To triple forte!
XXIII. Fade out voices in general confusion
XXIV. Sounds of noisy street traffic at a crowded intersection
XXV. Soft steam hissing from a tea kettle. Fade out. Silence
